Close up/extreme close up shot

· Shows facial expressions/emotions

· Makes someone feel important/dominant

Long shot

· Shows body language

· Allows us to see a person in relation to their surroundings

Medium shot

· Shows facial expressions/emotions AND body language

Two shot

· Shows the relationship between two people

Establishing shot

· Establishes the setting e.g. place, time, setting, weather etc

POV shot

· Puts the audience in the characters shoes

Eye level shot

· Allows the situation to remain neutral/objective (not manipulate the situation)

Birds eye view shot

· Allows us to see something in its larger surroundings (sets scene it’s in)

· Makes something look small or insignificant

Low angle

· Makes people look large, tall, dominant, powerful etc

· Dramatic

High angle

· Makes people look small, vulnerable, weak, innocent

· Positions the audience to feel sympathy

Canted/Dutch angle

· Makes people or situations look distorted, chaotic, drunk, drugged, dizzy etc

Tracking/dolly shot

· Used when a character is moving

· Shows more than one thing in a scene, or how different things are arranged or related

· Shows someone’s journey

Handheld shot

· Shows action, drama, urgency

· Used in fast paced scenes

· Helps put the audience into the scene

Shallow focus

· Makes someone seem important

· Draws the audience’s attention to something

Deep focus

· Shows surroundings

· Represents everyone as important

Pull focus

· Changes where the audience is looking

· Draws our attention to something else in the frame (possibly more important)

Zoom in

· Focuses our attention on someone/something

Zoom out

· Shows the bigger picture/surroundings (can help set scene)

Trombone/vertigo shot/dolly zoom

· Shows dramatic reactions/major events

Pan left/right

· Shows where something/someone is going

· Shows something just out of the shot etc

Tilt up/down

· Shows the whole of an object or person, revealing a bit at a time

· Makes it seem like someone/the audience are ‘looking’ at something e.g. objectifying it

Crane up/down

· Makes the scene seem dramatic

· Draws attention to someone’s isolation

Random motion

· Provides shot with motion/energy

· Makes it come alive

360 degree shot

· Shows a person/thing or event from all angles

· Helps the audience see exactly what’s going on in more depth
